Chronicle

One place. Many possible stories. Advance the world whenever you're ready.

PEOPLE OF THE CLEARING

Characters

These are persistent independent characters, not disposable AI chat sessions.

Everything listed below exists in the database independently of the AI.

YOUR ACCOUNT

Account and Chronicle

All accounts share one persistent world and one turn clock. Each player controls their own characters and queues orders for the same upcoming turn.

WORLD CONTROL

Administration

Configure the engine, AI model, and local operation. The world does not run turns automatically. All queued player actions are processed together when anyone advances.

AI connection

On Windows, the key is encrypted with your Windows account and saved outside the website and SQLite database. Restarting Chronicle will not erase it. The key is never shown again after saving. You may also use OPENAI_API_KEY in your environment.

Targets apply to eventful turns. Quiet turns stay shorter. Longer stories use more API output tokens and may cost more.

Each code permits one new player account and expires after 30 days. Codes are stored hashed and cannot be recovered.

Backups & server

A backup includes the complete SQLite state and your prompt files, never API credentials.

Danger zone

Reset removes all characters, structures, inventories, projects, past turns and Chronicle history. Download a backup first. Local prompt files stay intact.

To restart, run START_CHRONICLE.bat again. Pausing turns leaves the website accessible.

OpenAI project Prompt IDs

Platform Prompt IDs are independent of local prompt files. To use the refreshed rules with a saved Platform Prompt ID, republish that prompt with the current shared rules and role instructions; alternatively clear its ID to use the updated local fallback. The story-length option still applies when a Platform Prompt ID is used. Create saved prompts in the OpenAI Platform Playground for your existing Chronicle API project. Paste each published Prompt ID below. A filled ID means Chronicle sends only the saved prompt reference and world state for that role; an empty ID uses local prompt files. Each saved prompt must contain the shared world rules plus that role’s instructions. Prompt content still counts as model input tokens.

Read API_PLATFORM_SETUP.md for step-by-step setup.

World-wide AI instructions

Current local shared rules. Edit and save here, or load the updated world rules template. These local instructions are used when a role has no saved Platform Prompt ID.

File: prompts/world_rules.txt

Planner and Narrator prompts

Edit the local prompts used when the role has no Platform Prompt ID. Your custom text is retained during upgrades. Use the current templates below when you want the refreshed engine instructions; saving backs up the previous text.

AI prompt files

Edit these files with any text editor. Changes take effect on the next call when a saved Platform Prompt ID is NOT set for that role.
